At California Skin Institute we offer a variety of treatment options for muscle-induced wrinkles, with Xeomin® being a just one of the choices for addressing instances of heavy wrinkles and frown lines. The treatment, however, has several other uses and has been applied by physicians for treatment of neck problems caused by cervical dystonia and eyelid twitching/spasm issues. The doctors at California Skin Institute have significant experience with this often-misunderstood procedure, we can help you access whether Xeomin® is the best option in your specific situation, and perform it virtually painlessly for those patients who are good candidates for treatment.

What is Xeomin® used for?

Xeomin® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles, and works very much like Botox®, by temporarily reducing or eliminating muscle contractions in the area. This ability to limit muscle contractions has opened many avenues for the use of this treatment. For example, Xeomin® has been used to:

  • Treat abnormal spasm of the eyelids in adults who have had prior treatment with onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox®), by relaxing the facial muscles that control the eyelids.
  • Temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. Much like Botox®, the Xeomin® can temporarily limit movement in certain muscles, thus reducing the appearance of frown lines and other heavy wrinkles.
  • Treat the abnormal head position and neck pain that happens with cervical dystonia (CD) in adults. With cervical dystonia, neck muscles contract involuntarily, often affecting head position and causing great pain to the sufferer. Xeomin® treatment can relax these muscles, giving the patient temporary relief

How does Xeomin® work?

Much like Botox®, Xeomin® relies on botulinum toxin to temporarily relax facial muscles by preventing contraction of muscle fibers. Without muscle contraction certain wrinkles, like frown lines and forehead wrinkles, can be significantly reduced, since they are caused by muscle movements, and not just the natural aging of the skin.

At California Skin Institute, our doctors typically complete the procedure in 10-20 minutes, and you are able to continue about your day uninterrupted. We use specialized injection techniques and needles to maximize localization of the injections, to ensure that the right muscles are being temporarily relaxed. Our skin care specialists also take significant care to ensure that you are left with a natural appearance, rather than the “plastic” look that is often created by inexperienced professionals.

How long does Xeomin® last?

The results of a typical Xeomin® injection tend to last about 3 months, which of course heavily depends on the patient’s individual chemistry and metabolism rates. However, keep in mind that Xeomin® treatments are likely a better solution for ongoing facial skin treatment, as results from this treatment will show their strongest appearance after about 30 days. This is different from dermal fillers like Belotero Balance® or Perlane®, which tend to show more immediate results.
